A custom bike is a longtime dream of many riders.
Not everything is better in a handmade custom version. But when it comes to road bikes, even the best standard bikes can’t compare to good custom versions. Sponsors pay Pro-riders to use standard bikes, but many pros choose custom models when their careers stop.
What’s the big difference?
Fit, performance and quality are the three most important things. Habit can crush all discomfort except the one that comes with being out of shape. The more you drive, the more important these aspects are.
Unless you are 100% “average”, no pre-made frame will ever fit you as well as one customized to your measurements, from the inside seam to reach up to how far you bend at the waist while riding. While the fit of a bespoke suit results in a better look, the fit of a made to measure road bike translates into feeling better, along with various pains at the back, neck and arms associated with driving. Wherever you take your custom bicycle, you will be delighted with the fit, and anyone who knows anything about bikes will tell you that fit is the most important thing.
Then there is the performance issue.
Comfort, after hours spent cycling, would translate into performance. The more you save, the more you can spend on the last part of the long run. But a custom bike won’t make you a faster rider. But it probably makes you a happier driver, and that’s very important. We spoke about that in the article “which bicycle to choose for Endurance”
Custom bike appearance.
The last thing to consider is the craftsmanship and appearance. You have to consider how perfectly and lovingly the frames are made. And choosing the colours, the finish, the signature, the special graphics, your initials, etc., for a truly unique bike.
Individual frame makers are true artists, and quirky imperfection is part of the game. But it is also part of what is able to give a soul to the bike you will ride.
